Blog Quest 2 - Quotes

I think this quote definitely describes the struggles of society. When the kids first landed on the island, they discovered that they were no adults, and many kids were excited. Ralph was definitely excited that no one was there to enforce the rules of society. I think as the books goes on, the mystique of having no parents go away and Ralph starts to focus on being rescued. Another way to interpret this quote is the effect that focus has on society. On the island, order will rise when everyone is focused, and fall when no one’s focused. For example, if the littluns are scared of the “beastie” or if Jack and his hunters let the signal fire go out and hunt instead; it’s a bigger struggle to keep things running. Civilizations have risen and fallen throughout the ages; kind of like the body being lifted by the wind and falling when the wind is gone.

The quote really shows how each of the kids' lives before the were stranded won't help them on the island. It doesn't matter who was richer or poorer, smarter or dumber, or even how they acted at school. It's kind of like a "New World" for them. They're by themselves on a deserted island. No adults are there to enforce the rules that the kids are used to. They have to start all over.
